August 12, 2009 update - Kimberly Rivera wins another temporary stay in Canadian court!

Courage to Resist and supporters delivered 6,000 signatures in support of Kimberly Rivera and all war resisters seeking refuge in Canada on July 8th. After a vigil in front of the Canadian Consulate in downtown San Francisco, the gathering made their way upstairs to make their case directly to a representative of the consulate. Watch Bill Carpenter's 6:30 min. video below.

The following day in Toronto, Canada, the federal judge in Kimberly Rivera's appeal to remain in Canada "reserved his decision." Following the hearing, Kimberly stated, "I shouldn't have to destroy my family for deciding not to destroy somebody else's family."

Pressure renewed on Harper government to implement votes of Canadian Parliament

TORONTO—On Tuesday afternoon the Federal Court of Canada granted Kimberly Rivera leave to appeal the decision in her Pre-Removal Risk Assessment (PRRA). The Federal Court will hear the appeal on July 8.

Iraq War resister Kimberly Rivera, who is currently seeking refuge in Canada with her husband and children, received word late March 25th that the Canadian Federal Court granted her a stay pending a decision on whether or not they will review a decision by immigration officials rejecting her pre-removal risk assessment.

Please contact the leaders of the official opposition and ask them to support U.S. Iraq War resisters.

On March 10, 2009 war resister and mother Kimberly Rivera was ordered to leave Canada, with her husband and three young children, by March 26 or face deportation. The Riveras have requested that their deportation date be postponed until June, when the school year is complete; however, the Canadian department of immigration pressed to have them deported as fast as possible, in order to speed up Kimberly’s ‘punishment’ at the hands of the U.S. military authorities.
